Blog / How to Balance Family Relationships with Your Study Schedule

Maintaining family relationships while doing college kind of sounds oxymoronic, but I promise, it isn’t. After all, many college students manage to balance crazy school and work schedules with building and strengthening family relationships. Your family (no matter how much they might bug you) is going to be there for you forever, and though it seems impossible to stay close to them in college, you can do it. You ask how you can manage it? Well, there are three key elements to that you need to keep in mind in order to keep your family ties strong

There are three key elements to that you need to keep in mind in order to keep your family ties strong.

Take the time

Without time, relationships don’t grow, and time is something all college students are short on. This can mean carving an hour or two out of your free time on Sunday afternoons to spend Skyping your parents. It might mean multitasking—taking a walk and talking on the phone, combining exercise with relationship building. Your schedule can change at a moment’s notice, but if you decide to take the time to maintain relationships, it will happen.

Some days, especially after an exciting adventure or a stressful test, all you might want to do is vent to your mom. But you have to remember that she might need to talk and share. Sometimes you have to be the listener. Relationships aren’t one sided; they’re a two way street. So listen. Listen to your little brother’s description of the neighbor’s new dog. Let your older sister tell you all about the crazy people at her workplace. Just listen. It will make all the difference.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” ― Leo Buscaglia

Invest the energy

Building family relationships throughout college takes a lot of work. You need to find out what encourages your family members. Do they like hand written letters? Random texts? Care packages? Phone calls? Find out what they like and surprise them with it. Even sending them something from Amazon is a cheap and fast way to show some love.

In conclusion, your family members are the only people that will never leave you. Even if you don’t see them for years at a time or they drive you crazy, are the most important people in your life. So take the time, listen, and invest the energy to make your family relationships survive your stressful, busy, hectic college life. I promise it’ll pay off in the end.
